Gap Analysis


Definition

You can access view by selecting Licenses > Potential Savings in the menu. These views enable you to reduce operating costs related to licenses in the IT infrastructure. You can compare the number of licenses with the number of software actually installed, analyze the differences between required and actual configurations, and identify workstations where software has been installed without an authorized license.

EndDefinition

This enables you to take corrective actions such as license compliance, upgrade workstations to the required configuration, or uninstall software installed without an authorized license.

Notes

  • Software included in views:
    • Software managed in the catalog associated with a license.
    • Software detected by the Discovery module, manually added or imported to the catalog.
    • Software physically associated with an item of equipment or a user via an application.
  • Software not included in views:
    • Software installed on workstations no longer belonging to the IT infrastructure (archived workstations) even if they have not been deleted.
  • Licenses included in repoviewsrts:
    • Package licenses.
    • Covered licenses.
  • Licenses not included in views:
    • Archived licenses no longer belonging to the inventory.
    • Licenses merged with a new license, archived or no longer belonging to the inventory. Only the new license is included in views.

Menu access: Asset Management > Licenses > Potential Savings > Gap Analysis

This view displays the following for each software, regardless of the version installed:

  • The number of workstations where the software is installed or used via an application.
  • The number of software acquired, calculated using the maximum number of authorized installations per license associated with the software in the catalog.
  • The number of software used, for software detected by the Usage module.
  • The number of workstations where software belonging to a standard build is installed.

Gap Analysis by Version view

Menu access: Asset Management > Licenses > Potential Savings > Gap Analysis by Version

This view displays the following for each installed software version:

  • The number of software acquired, calculated using the maximum number of authorized installations per license associated with the software version in the catalog.
  • The number of software installed on workstations or used via an application.
  • The difference between the number of software acquired and the number installed.
  • The status, indicated by an icon, used to give a quick idea of the situation:
    • Smiley bad value.gif This indicates that software installations exceed the number of licenses acquired ==> Corrective action for compliance or uninstallation is required.
    • Smiley good value.gif This indicates that the number of licenses acquired exceeds software installations ==> You should decrease the number of licenses.
       
  • You manage licenses by version using the Gap Analysis by License Version scheduled alert which is run at regular intervals.
  • Versions are taken into account in the order in which they are defined in the license usage rights.
  • Click a software to display the list of associated license versions.

Installed Software view

Menu access: Asset Management > Licenses > Potential Savings > Installed Software

This view displays a list of all workstations where monitored software is installed.

  • Click Display popup icon.png to access the corresponding Equipment form.

Software to Install view

Menu access: Asset Management > Licenses > Potential Savings > Software to Install

This view displays all workstations where software belonging to a standard build required by workstation usage is not installed.

  • The number is shown for each software to be installed. Note: There is no cost estimation for this installation.
  • Click a software to see a list of the workstations where it is installed.

Software to Uninstall view

Menu access: Asset Management > Licenses > Potential Savings > Software to Uninstall

This view displays all workstations where software not belonging to a standard build required by workstation usage is installed.

  • For each software, you can see the number to be uninstalled as well as the potential savings resulting from uninstallation. This is estimated using the Price per System/User amount in the software catalog.
  • Click a configuration to see the list of equipment where non-mandatory software can be uninstalled.

Software not in Current Version view

Menu access: Asset Management > Licenses > Potential Savings > Software not in Current Version

This view displays the list of software whose installed version does not correspond to the current version defined in the catalog.

Workstations by Standard Build view

Menu access: Asset Management > Licenses > Potential Savings > Workstations by Standard Build

This view displays the number of workstations associated with different standard builds.

  • Click a configuration to display the list of equipment associated with it.
