Rules for Software Detection

Definition

The dectection rules are used by an automatic discovery tool to detect software on workstations through the presence of executables, components, registry keys, ...

EndDefinition

Once a software/component is detected by the discovery tool on a workstation, the main software is considered to be installed.

  • A Software form will automatically be created in the catalog.
  • A license will automatically be counted.

Example

1. WinZip software:

  • Detected by the automatic discovery tool ==> The Software form is automatically created for the current version 7
  • Usage rights are created. The current version also covers the earlier version WinZip 6:
    • Current Version = 7
    • Enter the software covered in the Usage Rights tab, i.e. WinZip for version 6.

2. Create a detection rule for the Office software package:

  • Create the Software form for the main Office 2010 software.
  • Define the rule: Software is detected through the presence of one of the software, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook, on the workstation ==> A license is counted when one of the software is installed on a workstation.

3. Licenses are counted based on software installed on three workstations.

  • Word license: 2 installations authorized
  • Camtasia Studio license: 2 installations authorized
  • WinZip 7 license: 2 installations authorized
PC1 PC2 PC3
Installed Software Word Camtasia Studio WinZip 6 Word WinZip 7 Word Excel
Counted license 1 1 1 1 1 1 0
Rule used Office 2010 Covered license WinZip 6 Office 2010 Office 2010 Office 2010: Word already present

4. Actions to be performed:

  • MS Office software (Word, Excel): 2 installations authorized; 3 software installed ==> 1 missing license. Corrective action for compliance or uninstallation is required.
  • Camtasia Studio software: 2 installations authorized; 1 software installed ==> 1 unused license. This results in unjustified expenses.
  • WinZip software: 2 installations authorized; 2 software installed ==> no license available.

Notes

  • Detection rules are enabled when the Import Software from Discovery scheduled alert is enabled.
  • You can create rules in the Detection Rules tab in the software catalog. You can modify them subsequently in the reference table.
  • Only software managed in the catalog can be associated with a rule.
  • If there is a conflict involving two or more detection rules, the system will select the most encompassing rule.
