EV Reach - Global Configuration via a Group Policy Object (GPO)

Last modified on 2024/01/09 15:57

The EV Reach solution includes a Group Policy Object (GPO) administrative template that can be used to configure EV Reach across your infrastructure. Using this GPO Template, you will be able to:

  • Define configuration settings of the EV Reach operator console and client agent (e.g., Database settings, communication port, etc.)
  • Restrict the features accessible to EV Reach operators.
  • Define the behavior of EV Reach on the client machine side (e.g., Acceptance prompt for a remote desktop access session.)
  • Customize the text and images of the user interface on the client side.

Note: The recommended method to globally configure EV Reach is via the Global Policy Services of the EV Reach Server. The EV Reach GPO is an alternative in case a EV Reach Server cannot be implemented, or in addition to a EV Reach Server in the event, the server is unavailable.

Installing the EV Reach GPO Template

Both ADMX and ADM GPO templates can be found under the installation directory of the EV Reach Console, for instance:

C:\Program Files\EV Reach Console 9\GPO Templates\

Use the ADMX format for Active Directory based on Windows Server 2008 and later, and the ADM format for prior Active Directory.

ADMX/ADML Installation

Note: If you already have a Group Policy infrastructure, skip step 1.

  1. Create the central store folder in the SYSVOL directory on a Domain Controller. For instance: \\corp.contoso.com\policies\PolicyDefinitions\  where "corp.contoso.com" is the FQDN of your organizations domain
  2. Copy the Goverlan_GPO_Admin_Template.admx file to \\corp.contoso.com\policies\PolicyDefinitions\
  3. Copy the Goverlan_GPO_Admin_Template.adml file to \\corp.contoso.com\policies\PolicyDefinitions\en-us\

ADM Installation

  1. Copy the GoverLAN_Group_Policy_Admin_Template.adm to any location on the Domain Controller.
  2. Open the Group Policy Management Console on your domain controller.
  3. Create a new policy or edit an existing one.
  4. Browse to  Computer Configuration → Policies → Administrative Templates.
  5. Right-click Administrative Templates and select Add/Remove Templates.
  6. Search for the GoverLAN_Group_Policy_Admin_Template.adm and import it.

See Find out more on Microsoft site.

Configuring EV Reach Group Policies

Once the EV Reach GPO templates are imported, open the Group Policy Management Console, create a new policy for the desired scope and configure the EV Reach policies using the following path:

Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Goverlan Global Policies

GovGPO.jpg

The EV Reach Global Policies are divided into the following sub-sections:

EV Reach Client Agents Settings Configuration items of the EV Reach Client Agents such as communication port, update policy.
EV Reach Common Settings Configuration items shared by the EV Reach management console and the EV Reach Remote Control. For instance, database configuration.
EV Reach Features RestrictionsRestriction policies for the primary EV Reach features and options on the operator and client sides.
EV Reach Management Console SettingsMiscellaneous configuration items of the EV Reach console.
Remote Control Client Settings Policies used to define the behavior during a remote desktop access session. For instance the behavior of the user acceptance prompt.
User Interface CustomizationCustomization of the text and images displayed by the EV Reach user interface on the client user side.

Once you have configured the Group Policy settings, you will need to wait for them to be distributed onto your machines before you can see the text modifications. To test your settings on a client machine, open a command prompt on this one and execute a GPUPDATE.exe command.
