The Favorites section is an area where you can store and organize computer objects in order to quickly access them whenever you need it. The Favorite section can contain Machine objects, Static Containers and Dynamic Containers. In addition, the Static Container can contain any types of object, including sub-containers, allowing you to create a hierarchy of your choice. The Favorites Section can also be used to generate a WMI Report on a group of machines.

Showing the Favorites Panel

• If the Favorites panel is closed, open the main command menu and select Show Panels >> Favorites from the main menu.
• To set or un-set the Favorites panel in the auto-hide mode, click on the button located on the panel bar.

  

  In the auto-hide mode, the Favorites panel is minimized when not used and only appears when you place the mouse cursor over its tab.
• To move the Favorites panel to another area of the WMIX workspace, click on the panel's bar and drag it to the desired location.

Adding a Computer Item

• To add a new entry in the Favorite Targets list, right-click on the static container and select Add Computer.
• Enter the NetBIOS name, DNS name or IP address of the remote machine to add, then click on OK. You can also click on the Advanced button to add machine objects in more advanced ways. For instance, you can scan an IP segment, add domain computer accounts or import machine names from a CSV file.OR
• If you used the Connect button to start a browser session to a machine which does not belong in the Favorites list, you can right click on the browser's tab and select Add to Favorite from the context sensitive menu.

Note: Using this method will add the computer entry in the Root folder of the Favorites. Once added, use Drag and Drop to move the entry in the desired container.

Connecting to a Favorite Entry

• To set the current browser view's focus to a favorite item, simply double click on it, or select it, then right-click on the mouse and select the Openentry from the context sensitive menu.
• To set the current browser view's focus to a favorite item using a different set of credentials, select it, then right-click on the mouse and select theOpen As entry from the context sensitive menu.
• To open a favorite connection in a new browser window, select the favorite item, then right-click on the mouse and select the Open in new windowentry from the context sensitive menu.

Creating a Container Hierarchy

The Favorites Section can contain any number of folders and sub-containers in order to facilitate the organization of your objects.

• To create a sub-container, select the parent container and click on the Add Container button, or right click on the mouse and select Add Container.

• Then Select Static Container.
• Enter the name of the new static container and press the enter key.

Adding Dynamic Containers

In addition to static containers which contain a static list of child objects, you can add dynamic folders which will update their contents every time they are opened. You can add two types of dynamic folders: Active Directory Containers and IP Segments.

To view the contents of a dynamic container, double click on it. To refresh the contents of an opened dynamic container, right click on it and select Refresh Content.

Active Directory Containers

Active Directory dynamic containers link to an existing Active Directory container. When opened, the machine account contents of the Active Directory container is displayed in the Favorites panel.

• To create an Active Directory container, select the parent container and click on the Add Container button, or, right click on the mouse and selectAdd Container.
• Click on Active Directory Container.
• Select a display name for the container.
• Click on the Active Directory Browser button to navigate through the local active directory folder hierarchy and select the domain and container to link this object to.

  

• To further filter out the resulting list of computer objects, you can configure a Name Filter. The name filter string should not contain any wild cards. For instance, to return computers which have the string 'LEGAL' in their name (ie: MAC_LEGAL_01, LEGAL_MAC122, MACLEGAL03), enter the name filter:  LEGAL.
• Optionally, you can enter a Location, Description and Comment entry.
• Click on OK.

IP Subnet Range Containers

IP Subnet Range containers return the computer objects which have an IP address in the configured IP Subnet Range.

• To create an IP Subnet Range container, select the parent container and click on the Add Container button, or, right click on IP Subnet Range.
• Select a display name for the container.
• Optionally, you can enter a Location, Description and Comment entry.
• Define the IP Range.
• Configure the criteria which defines when an IP Address is returned when opening the container.

Customizing the Favorites Information

Each object in the Favorites view includes 4 fields which can be set to a string of your choice: Display Name, Location, Description and Comment. Some of these fields are not visible as columns by default. To show or hide a field's column, right-click within the column headers and check or un-check the desired column name.

To modify these fields, single click within them in the main view, or right-click within the field and select Edit Field, or, open the Properties of that object.

Generating a WMI Report on a group of machines

To create a report using one of the pre-configured report templates:

1. Select a parent container which contains one or more child computer objects.
2. Right-click on the mouse, select: Report > and then select the report template to use.

Sorting Favorites

You can sort the favorite items in two ways:

1. Click on the header of a column to sort the information by that column. This performs a temporary sorting of the information. Once you restart the program, this sorting information is not saved.
2. Select a parent container, right-click on the mouse and use the Sort Bycontext menu. When using this method, the resulting list order is persistent.

Importing / Exporting Favorites

You can export the entire Favorites hierarchy or a sub-branch of the hierarchy.

To export a Favorites section

1. Select the parent container to be exported, right-click on the mouse and select Export.
2. Specify the name and path of the export file.
3. Select the desired export format by changing the Save As Type field.You can export favorites as:
   • Favorite XML file
   • Plain Text file
   • Comma Separated Values (CSV) fileNote: Only the Favorites XML and CSV files are acceptable formats for Imports.

To import Favorites

1. Select the container to use as parent container, right-click on the mouse and select Import. Note: You can only select a Static Container to import favorites.
2. Choose the format of the import file. You can either use the native Favorites XML format or a CSV file.The CSV import format is as follows: "display name","Network Name","Location","Comment","Description". It can only contain machine objects.
3. Specify the name and path of the import file.
